The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved a final groundwater cleanup design for BASF’s North Works facility in Wyandotte, Michigan. The plan aims to prevent PFAS, heavy metals and other contaminants from reaching the Detroit River.

The approximately 230-acre site has been used for chemical manufacturing since the 1800s. Earlier investigations identified groundwater contamination around the facility, including PFAS, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds and semi-volatile organic compounds.

The approved design includes perimeter barriers, a groundwater collection and extraction system, and an on-site treatment facility. Captured groundwater will be treated before discharge or reuse. Construction is expected to begin in early 2027.
